Under a Tree

Sing me a sad song, li'll girl
And I'll sit beside you forever.
I have nowhere to go anyway
I can't read maps, I ain't clever.
Sing me a sad song, li'll girl
Maybe I'll shed a tear or two,
Or look at falling leaves.
But I promise I'll make it up to you.
I'll sit beside you,
Dusty jeans and all,
And mend my broken shoe.
As slowly Autumn leaves fall
I'll light a candle for you;
So that you can read your slow, sad song-
A song about a time
When songs were merry with mirth and rhyme
And a few shades less of blue.
A song about how those days
Got lost along my dusty ways.
It's everybody's song, and not just mine;
It's everyone's somewhere down the line...
And it's your song too.
As you slowly play your slow, sad tune
I'll mend my broken shoe;
For shoes can be fixed when they break
But not people,
Like me or you.
